about emily wool
I began seeing patterns in nature during a trip to Adirondacks in fall 2015. The birch bark, trailing pine, and plants I can’t even begin to name jumped out at me and asked to be translated to patterns on fabric. I was happy to oblige, and have been doing so ever since.
My work occurs in cycles. For months I drew hundreds of patterns that I was seeing, and then chose some of those patterns to be carved into blocks for printing on fabric. I played with colors, patterns, and placement and am now in the stages of producing bags, pouches, and eco-friendly items for the home. Each and every bag is handmade by me.
I work out of my studio in Charlottesville, VA, where I also teach printmaking classes and show people how to see patterns in nature. I believe very deeply in the concept of “flow” as a technique for finding balance in one’s life, and try to host classes that are supportive, positive, and leave room for lots of creative exploration and questioning.
